Short one star because the original vinyl, even my somewhat worn copy, sounds more dynamic, wide and engaging. But this re-issue gives a very flat and clear presentation and still maintains good dynamics. I can hear the lyrics much more clearly, so now I have a choice in listening for Remain In Light. The physical quality of this re-issue is exceptional. No warping and quiet in silent passages. I''m pleased with this purchase.

Just bought this because it was remixed, and most of the time, that''s a good thing. It was pressed in Germany. It''s absent midrange, vocals are not as they are on original (which I still have) at all. Seems compressed and the bass is boosted to the point of muddy. Remain In Light is a masterpiece. This remix destroys it. The original mix is bright and ''up''. This makes it dark. It''s hard to screw a remix up this badly I would think... nope. Whoever remixed it was a master of "thud" and "buzz" appealing to a tuner car kid with a extra large fart can so he can''t hear his 1200 watt woofer machine anyway. But he''s got eight 12" woofers. No tweeters. None. And it sound like this.

I''ve heard negative things about the Quality Control at RHINO and I bought Talking Heads Speaking in Tongues at my local record shop last week and was dismayed to discover that Side 2 was absolutely COVERED in scuffing around the ENTIRE vinyl. I figured maybe it was isolated to that album, the others seem to have good reviews, but nope, immediately after pulling this out of the package I inspected it under a light and discovered that not just one, but BOTH sides are scuffed up. both sides were also very dirty and resulted in a lot of surface noise. Additionally the inner sleeve was damaged on the bottom and side from the album bursting through it. makes me think I was sold an album someone else may have returned. Really unhappy overall.

Save your money and buy the original 80s LPs USED... back when pressing factories still had some form of quality control.

Let''s talk about that iconic cover first. That album cover intrigues and terrifies me. It pretty much sums up the music on "Remain in Light". Dark, brooding, and playfully ambitious. This was the Talking Heads'' 4th studio album and holy smokes - it was a groundbreaking one! This album was produced by Brian Eno. And unfortunately, this would be the final time the band would collaborate with him and all his mad GENIUS. "Remain in Light" is considered their best album. But for me, their commercial breakthrough, "Speaking in Tongues" is their best. But "Remain in Light is definitely a favorite of mine. What makes "Remain in Light" such a memorable album are the never-ending and sparkling melodies. The melodies just keep coming at you from every direction. Powerful stuff here. This album was released in 1980 and nothing from the music, to the lyrics, or the production feels dated or false. Everything STILL feels modern and truly unique. Talking Heads were a highly intellectual band thanks to the frantic/gifted mind of front-man, David Byrne. His songwriting was always razor-sharp and unpredictable. He pretty much said what everybody else was thinking. Jerry Harrison, Tina Weymouth, and Chris Frantz proved they were just as talented as Byrne with their expansive musical knowledge and their "artsy" persona. Talking Heads were one of the smartest new wave bands to come out of CBGB. There will NEVER be a more important band. Ever. They were the definition of avant-garde.

There are only 8 tracks on "Remain in Light" but they are BIG and EXPLOSIVE. The first 5 tracks are some of the band''s best written. "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)" is my favorite track. The song is a sarcastic stab at the ugliness of politics. The lyrics are mind-blowing and the music is dripping with sweaty, raw urgency. "Crosseyed and Painless" is a delight. A fan favorite. It''s a manic and pulsating dance track. "The Great Curve" is a freakin'' MASTERPIECE. The blistering guitar licks will knock the wind out of you, and the hooks/tempo changes are fast and electrifying. Excellent use of percussion. The African rhythmic beat is steady and ferocious. "Once in A Lifetime" is a classic. It''s a clever, spot-on commentary about how "having it all" can be both a blessing and a curse. The unexpected hip-hop beat in the beginning of the track still sounds fresh and innovative. "Houses in Motion" is a head-scratcher. It''s weird but awesome. Great ad-libs and I love the "talky" verses. The last 3 songs were the most experimental and introspective starting with the poetic, "Seen And Not Seen". And the "Listening Wind" borrows a little bit from Native American culture. And the album closer, "The Overload" is a slow-burning but slightly draggy ballad. I highly recommend this haunting album. "Remain in Light" might be dark for some but it''s never boring. Talking Heads NEVER made a boring album. They didn''t know the meaning of the word. Enjoy!

I only had this on CD so I thought that I would buy it on vinyl, sadly the album arrived with one of the corners badly creased and a split in both the cover and inner sleeve. Unfortunately this is 4th or 5th time that vinyl record from Amazon have arrived in this state. So I will no longer be purchasing records from Amazon, as the art work (cover) of the album is a integral part of collecting records. I''ll be purchasing my vinyl from a different source, somewhere where the staff know how to handle the product.

I purchased Remain in Light because it includes the timeless, shimmering brilliance of the single Once In A Lifetime, surely one of THE greatest and most memorable hits ever recorded. It is unusual that this concise and catchy pop classic sits amongst longer and less single-orientated, experimental songs such as Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) and The Overload. Having said that, this album has received a lot of very positive reviews over the years, so it is very much a case of personal taste. If you want a Talking Heads album which is more conventionally pop orientated, listen to 1985''s Little Creatures instead, which in my opinion is their best album, and most successful in terms of sales. One of the most inventive, rhythmic and original bands of all time.

"Surround yourself with Talking Heads" says the sticker irrevocably fixed to the jewel case, but it remains one of the great albums by anyone. Period. This CD + DVDA is, inevitably, remastered but to good effect - loud yes, compressed no. And there''s the 5.1 surround on the DVD - wow! While I''m not keen on the DVDA format - why have a screen to navigate audio? and you''d get it all on one SACD rather than the 2 discs here - the sound is a revelation - and the original vinyl was good. You are effectively in the band. The energy and power is incredible, the surround reveals the layers and density of the original in a non gimmicky way, serving the music - essentially original band at the front and extra vocals, percussion etc at the back with some parts swirled around inbetween: the Belew guitar solos in The Great Curve for example. If you though you knew this album - and I''ve had the vinyl since it came out - think again. The DVDA "plays on all DVD players" which is reassuring given dire warnings on some discs and there are 2 surround formats - advanced 96kHz/24bit and dolby; I only get the dolby on my DVD player so I can''t comment on the difference, but the dolby is great. The DVD extra performance videos from German TV are good, particularly ''Crosseyed And Painless'' which romps, while ''Once In A Lifetime'' is perhaps a little stilted. The CD is fine with admirable range, depth and bass. The bonus tracks are "unfinished" from the same sessions - rhythm tracks which make you wonder what potential songs were missed, except for ''Right Start'' which you will find has a very familiar bass riff eventually better employed... Of interest but not likely to be played much. The booklet could have featured the lyrics as the original LP did, however.
